Port Douglas
Pros: This little beach town is a slice of paradise. Port Douglas is surrounded by tropical rainforest and beautiful beaches. The main street is filled with a range of small boutiques, high end restaurants, cafes, and casual eateries. It’s easy to walk around town by foot and it’s not far from some famous attractions such as Hartleys Crocodile Farm and the Daintree Rainforest.
Things to be aware of: Swimming is not advised during “stinger” (jellyfish) season. It can be very hot and humid around December/January/February. Avoid walking/swimming around creeks and estuaries as this is the home of saltwater crocodiles.
Dingo Beach, Whitsundays
Pros: A gorgeous beach tucked away in a secluded location in the Whitsundays. Have you ever seen an amazing photo and thought- “this can’t be real”? Well, this is THE BEACH. White, silky soft sand, coconut trees, aqua blue sea water, with a backdrop of lush mountains.
Things to be aware of: This place is home to wild dingoes- which we think is a pretty cool thing! It can be hot and humid in during the summer months. Avoid swimming without nets/stinger suit during stinger season.
Cape Hillsborough National Park
Pros: As you enter this wild, wild destination, hidden among mountains and lush forests, you will find a small resort where you can camp out in nature. As you explore the grounds, you’ll have that sensation where you feel like you’re somewhere far, far away in the middle of nowhere. There’s no phone or internet coverage here. You can completely immerse yourself in nature. Enjoy a stroll on the beach, walk in the forest and see ancient caves that may have been used by the indigenous as shelter. This place is one of the most interesting and beautiful destinations we’ve enjoyed!
Things to be aware of: The beach here is tidal, therefore, if you’re walking over to the island at the tip, be aware of the tides. There may be stone fish present on the beach so wear protective foot wear. There’s no phone/internet reception.
Noosa Heads
Pros: A stunning beach town surrounded by beautiful beaches- from surf beaches to calm, hidden inlets. There are many activities to enjoy here such as surfing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and much more! Most people who reside here seem to live an active and healthy lifestyle. There are many national park walks and view spots. Hastings Street, the main street of Noosa, is a charming area filled with some excellent restaurants, bars, cafes, and boutiques.
Things to be aware of: It can get very busy during school holidays and the summer months that car parking in the main street can be a hassle. The weather during winter in Noosa is quite pleasant as it ranges around 22 degrees Celsius during the day and down to around 18 degrees Celsius at night.
Shoal Bay, Port Stephens
Pros: This beach has to be one of the most amazing beaches we have ever seen! It’s an extraordinary bay with white, soft sand and turquoise blue water with so much clarity. The waves are very delicate here which makes it the perfect spot to go for a dip and just sit around the shore. Kayaking is enjoy thoroughly here as well as stand up paddle boarding. The weather in Shoal Bay is somewhat described as similar to the Mediterranean climate.
Things to be aware of: The weather is wonderful here throughout the entire year. Summer is incredible here as the sea water warms up a little bit and the heat isn’t too strong or humid. It can be busy during the school holidays, but it has never been an issue- it’s in fact quite vibrant and fun!
