About the tour
Overview
The Puffing Billy Steam Train Tour is an absolute “must do” in the Dandenong Ranges as one of Melbourne’s longest running experiences. The railway line takes us on a journey into lush mountains abundant with wildlife, rainforest areas, and quaint mountain townships.
You will have plenty of time to relax and stroll along the historic streets of village towns such as Sassafras and Olinda, as well as visit scenic look outs and viewing spots perfect for capturing a memorable photograph or two.
Your Puffing Billy tour commences with the Puffy Billy steam train tour, winding through the beautiful forests of the Mount Dandenong Ranges.
Other highlights of this region include the William Ricketts Sanctuary, a mystical sculpture display set in the the middle of the rainforest. The sculptures depict the philosophies of the Aboriginal Australians and the tales of early English settlement in Australia.
End your spectacular day visiting a large scenic parkland/lookout to spot wild kangaroos!

William Ricketts Sanctuary
An aboriginal inspired sculpture garden set amongst the rainforest and native scenery of the Dandenong Mountains.
This is a very unique and powerfully spiritual place.
Lunch
A quick lunch in the mountain town of Olinda.
This town also features some unique boutiques.
Enjoy the Rainforest
In a dense rainforest environment, you can view large tree ferns and 100meter tall trees.
Puffing Billy Tour
Take a ride through the lush rainforest and small mountain towns on the historic Puffing Billy. This is a stream train that has been completely restored to its original condition. Not only the train, but also the stations and workers are in full 1800s attire and they will put on a show for you as you travel for one hour to a beautiful lakeside park station.
Lakeside Station
Departing the Puffing Billy, you will be able to walk around the lake and enjoy some time in the park.
Kangaroos in the Wild
Search the surrounds of a reservoir and try to find a mob of kangaroos in the wild.
